He worked odd jobs while waiting for his big break which finally came when he performed at an amteur talent show and was spotted by a Capitol Records executive who signed him in 1988. He released his self titled album in 1989 and has never looked back. Three of his albums, Ropin' the Wind, The Chase, and In Pieces, debuted at #1 on both pop and country charts. The first release from his hit album Sevens, Long Neck Bottle, made history by being the only song that was added to every Radio and Records reporting station on the day of it's release.
